If you are counting down the days to your summer getaway then it’s likely you have already started to think about what to pack.

With limited space, a little planning is essential if you are going to cover all clothing bases.

For organised individuals, the capsule wardrobe is the way to go, choosing a limited number of pieces which can be mixed and matched to create a variety of different outfits.

As style blog  Who What Wear explains: “To maximise your holiday capsule, stick to neutral and easy-to-style shades with the odd splash of colour. Remember, the aim is to be able to mix and match everything you pack. If you have a spare couple of inches once the essentials are safely strapped in, that's when you add in the fun extras.”

Sounds like a plan! But how do you narrow down what’s in your wardrobe to create your capsule holiday collection? Stylist magazine unpacks the 5-4-3-2-1 method, which recommends taking five tops, four bottoms, three dresses, three pairs of shoes, two swimwear items, two bags, one hat, one watch or accessory item and one pair of sunglasses.

It continues: “The key, though, is making sure everything you choose is flexible and adaptable – you should be able to mix and match almost all these items so you have enough outfit variations not to get bored. While the 5-4-3-2-1 method may take a little bit of forward thinking, it’s ultimately worth it to avoid the added cost and weight of unnecessary luggage, and carrying around those clothes you packed ‘just in case’ but never end up wearing.”

We have all been there! So, any suggestions for items which can double up for different occasions? Good Housekeeping has a few: “The key to a good holiday capsule wardrobe is versatility, so invest in multifunctional clothing that can easily transition from day to night. For instance, a black swimsuit is an essential for beachy holidays but can also double as an evening top; while a linen shirt will work as a chic cover-up by the pool, or a light jacket on those chillier evenings.”

And for those of you who are really stumped about what to pack, Two Week Traveller has come up with a comprehensive check ist which is sure to help!
